Semi-Trailer

A rock in a shoebox. A stick from the driveway. A marble that rolled under the couch last month and reappeared this morning like it never left. Children have always known that the important things are the things you move from place to place, carefully, because they matter. We chose this trailer because it turns carrying into a ceremony. It hooks to a truck. It hauls what needs hauling. It is there when the delivery must be made, when the cargo is precious, when the route has been planned in detail and cannot be questioned. It will be pulled across tile, through the gap behind the bookshelf, over the threshold into the next room where the depot is currently under construction.

The first load will be something small but vital. The second will require a longer route, possibly through the kitchen, definitely past the place where the cat is sleeping. By the third trip the whole operation will have a name, and you will be told the rules, which are fair and non-negotiable and subject to change.
