Q Toys was founded by Dr. Quan Nguyen and Cathy Dang, who built the company around play-based learning as an alternative to formal schooling. Their design team includes teachers, artists, engineers, and industrial designers. Eighty percent of production is handcrafted, which accounts for the quality of the joinery and finish. The wood comes from recycled plantation timber — rubber trees past their latex-producing years — so no natural forest is harvested. Q Toys trains disabled children in Vietnam's Mekong Delta who want to become craftspeople, and employs skilled artisans rather than unskilled labor.
