Chris Elfering, a former Army officer who founded BOND Travel Gear, got into fountain pens and discovered that most paper couldn't handle the ink without feathering or bleeding through. He found Tomoe River paper from Japan—thin, fountain pen-friendly stock that actually works—but the notebooks using it weren't built to last or travel well. So he started LOCHBY (named after Minneapolis, the City of Lakes, where he's from) to make better ones. This A5 notebook measures 5.83 x 8.27 inches with 72 pages of 68 gsm white Tomoe River paper, stitch-bound with a kraft paper cover. The 5mm dot grid keeps things organized without getting in the way. Acid-free paper, designed in the USA, assembled in Taiwan.
Tomoe River paper is so thin you can practically see through it, which sounds like a design flaw until you write on it with a fountain pen and realize it's some kind of Japanese sorcery. No feathering, no bleed-through, just your handwriting looking better than it deserves to. The kraft cover won't win design awards, but that's the point—this thing is here to work, not pose for Instagram.
